The Sun and Moon Curse

Is a curse cast 600 years ago, binding werewolves to the moon and making vampires slaves to the sun. This meant that werewolves can only turn under the full moon and vampires are unable to walk in the sunlight.

The curse is why Mason came looking for the moonstone. By breaking the curse all vampires will be able to walk in the sun and werewolves will be able to turn at their own free will.

To break the curse they need Katherine’s doppelgänger Elena and Rose warns her that the originals, mainly Klaus will be after her to use her. A witch is needed to cast a spell, using the moonstone. They also need a vampire and a witch.

Originally Katherine was a doppelgänger, when she was still human and went by the name Katerina Petrova. Meaning that there was another before her, in the Petrova family line. So Klaus was after her to use to break the curse. To save herself from her fate she turned, as a vampire she’s technically dead so can’t be used.

 

The Lockwood Curse

A werewolf curse runs in the Lockwood family, Mayor Lockwood, Mason and Tyler were all effected for it. It meant that every full moon they change into a wolf against their will. The curse has to be activated before they start changing, to do so someone has to die at their hands, accidentally or on purpose.

It is not said who Mayor Lockwood killed to active the curse on himself, but Mason told Tyler how he accidentally killed another man during a fight and Tyler activated the curse by knocking over a girl in a temper and  unintentionally killing her.

The Lockwoods were known to be more violently tempered, this was because of the curse. Mayor Lockwood had an argumentative relationship with his wife. Tyler noticed he often couldn’t control his temper,even more during a full moon before he activated the curse.
