New York Post – Season one review

“Despite the fact that I am, in vampire years, about 375 years too old for “The Vampire Diaries,” I’m so hooked after one episode that I feel like Vlad the Impaler when he was down to his last half pint of O positive.

This is a shock, because I’ve grown wearier of vampire morons than I have even of reality show morons.

But this one’s different.

Based on the best-selling young adult novels, the story begins on the first day of the new school year. Elena (Nina Dobrev) and her younger brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen, the grandson of the late and very great Steve McQueen), have lost their parents over the summer in a car accident. They now live with their young aunt in their hometown of Mystic Falls.” continues

Crytical Myth – review

“The Vampire Diaries” is the kind of show that went from guilty pleasure to outright must-watch. As I’ve said more than once, this show seems to exist to prove that the issues with “Twilight” are all about execution. It’s possible to have a show about somewhat pervy and disturbing teenage vampire/human romance without having it descend into emo nonsense.

One of the main advantages is that “The Vampire Diaries” is often scary, because the body count has been so high over the course of the series that it’s never entirely certain that anyone is safe. Even the survival of the main cast is often a matter of doubt. So when Tyler is forced to choose sides in the growing vampire/werewolf conflict, it’s not a minor consideration.” continues

Monsters and Critics – season one DVD review

“The endless fascination with vampires is producing a variety of films and television shows.  Vampire Diaries, based on a series of novels by the same named, authored by L. J. Smith offers fans of the genre another look at the lives and loves of the supernatural folk.

Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is a high school student, anguished by her parent’s recent death and her younger brother Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) descent into drugs.  In the new school year Elena hopes to find a happier time, and be able to move forward with her life.” continues
