Objects

The Vampire Diaries features a range of objects, many of which have a story of their own. Most of them are weapons or means of protection, others have their own credibility.

vervain

A herb originally used in Rome to sanitize homes and for its healing qualities. legend says it was used to protect from potential vampires, which makes it an ideal prob to use in The Vampire Diaries. In the program vervain is poisonous to vampires, it burns their skin at their touch and weakens them if they ingest it, either by a spiked drink or drinking vervain laced blood. A human can protect themselves from vampires just by carrying vervain with them, as it prevents compulsion. They also put it in their tea or use it as a bath oil. Zach Salvatore grew his own crop but kept it a secret from Damon, by spiking his drinks he and Stefan were able to imprison Damon while they regarded him a harm.

 

 

                                                Gilbert compass

 

Was invented in 1864 by Jonathon Gilbert and disguised as a watch. He used it to detect nearby vampires, like a normal compass needle points north it would point in the direction of a vampire. It was how he discovered Pearl was a vampire. It was passed down through generations to every first-born Gilbert son, the last being Jeremy. Carol Lockwood asked Elena to lend her the watch for the founders display, but really wanted it for the secret council. Seeing how much the watch meant to Jeremy Elena told her she couldn’t find it. Logan Fell stole it while in the Gilberts house, which is how it got into the hands of the secret council. While using the device they found Stefan, who they shot repeatedly with wooden bullets.

Gilbert Device

Was made by Jonathon Gilbert to catch vampires. It was believed by himself and others that he invented a working device, but Emily Bennett placed a spell on it to make it effective. when activated the device will expose any vampire within a 5 block radius.  It emits very high-pitched sound that only they can hear, causing them extreme pain and weakening them to the ground. Bonnie promised to remove the spell but only pretended, believing then that ridding the town on all vampires would be the best. It was used in the founders day episode to catch the tomb vampires that were out to get revenge on the founding families. Stefan described the pain as having needles injected into his skull.  The vampires that were caught were injected with vervain were injected with vervain and taking to the basement of the old Gilbert building which was set on fire. The device also effected Mayor Lockwood and Mason, but because they were under the werewolf curse.

Gilbert Rings

These rings protect the wearer from unnatural or supernatural causes. Originally charmed and given to Jonathon Gilbert by Emily Bennett, who passed them down through generations. Rings were owned by Grayson Gilbert (Elena and Jeremy’s father), and John who both inherited them from their father. John gave his ring to Isobel who gave it Alaric before leaving him. John took Grayson’s ring after he died and later passed it onto Jeremy. When returning to Mystic Falls John blackmailed Alaric’s ring off him by threatening to tell Jenna the truth about vampires. The ring does not protect from natural causes or accidents, which is why Grayson Gilbert died in a car crash while wearing his ring. The ring only protects if it is being worn, so by forcing the ring off the wearer can be harmed. In the season 1 finale Katherine was able to stab John by cutting off the fingers of which he wore the ring.

  

White Ash Wood and Dagger

  Is the only way to kill an original, by dipping a dagger in the ash and stabbing them in the heart. The dagger must stay in the body for the original to remain dead.  The ash came from an ancient oak, the tree was burnt but the ashes were saved for use. Witches created a suitable dagger, that when combined with the ash, would kill an original. Only a human can use the dagger, if a vampire uses it to kill it will kill them too. Alaric was the first to attempt to kill Elijah with it, but before knowing that removing the dagger would resurrect him. Elena was the one who killed him with it a second time, the body was then kept in the basement of the Salvatore boarding house so they could watch that the dagger was not removed  

  

Daylight Jewellery

 

Are pieces of jewellery that protect vampires from sunlight, allowing them to walk in the day. They are either rings or medallions and are made with a stone called Lapis Lazuli. The rings were enchanted by Emily Bennett apart from Caroline’s, which was enchanted by Bonnie.  Stefan and Damon both wear one’s bearing their family crest. Katherine, Anna, Pearl and Isobel all have medallions. Elijah was the first to know about and own a ring.  

 

Moonstone

The object of the sun and moon curse. The semi precious stone was owned by Mayor Lockwood who knew about the curse. The moonstone is needed to break the curse. Mason Lockwood hid the stone in a well wear Elena retrieved it after Stefan was unable to stay in the well as it was filled with vervain.

 

Bennett Talisman

Is an amber crystal set in iron. It was created by Emily Bennett using the power from a passing comet, it possessed enough power to seal the tomb that kept the vampires for 145 years. It was kept in the Lockwood mansion and taken by Damon at the founder’s ball, who wanted it to open the tomb. He dropped it and Caroline picked it up, she later gave it to Bonnie after deciding she didn’t want it. Grams showed Bonnie a photo of Emily wearing the same talisman after she called it a piece of junk. After the talisman gave her nightmares Bonnie disposed of it by throwing it into a field, only for it to reappear in her bag. in a séance the talisman is taken and Bonnie is possessed by Bonnie, who then burnt the talisman to destroy it.

 

Grimoire

A spell book originally owned by Emily Bennett who used it to seal the tomb. It was buried with Giuseppe Salvatore (Stefan and Damon’s Father) and only Jonathon Gilbert knew this. That was until Stefan read his journal, learning it’s location. With the help of Elena he dug up his father’s grave and retrieved the book. Bonnie and Grams were persuaded to use the Grimoire and Bonnie uses it to perform spells and learn about witchcraft. It also provides information about the device. 

 

Wolfsbane
A herb that has a similar effect on werewolves as vervain has on vampires, in both human and wolf form. Touching it burns their skin, as seen when Damon interrogated Mason Lockwood with some. Consumption of wolfsbane causes agony, especially if not diluted. If diluted and drunk it can slow down the full moon change but was described by Mason “like drinking battery acid”. Damon used it to spike Jules’ drink to see if she was a werewolf.

 

Diaries and Journals
Elena and Stefan both own diaries, which they write in, mostly keeping what they write personal to themselves. Jonathon, Giuseppe and Mason owned journals which have been read by the other characters to learn information.

 

 

Petrova Book

The book of Katherine’s family history from when she was known as Katerina Petrova. It is written that the Petrova family line ended with Katherine. In it is a drawing by Katherine of her family which she has stuck in.
